Kyle was born in Fullerton, California and received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Pomona College, where he worked with Professor E.J. Crane. In 2005, he began his doctoral studies on outer-sphere effects on the copper sites of Azurin with Professor Harry Gray at the California Institute of Technology. He then moved to Cornell University for his postdoctoral work with Professor Serena DeBeer, studying the electronic structure and speciation of synthetic and bioinorganic species, most notably the iron-molybdenum cofactor of Nitrogenase. Kyle began his independent career at Cornell University in 2012 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2018.

Kyle was recently recognized by the US Department of Energy’s Office of Science as a rising star in the field of physical biosciences; he was also recently named a Kavli Fellow (2018). His awards and honors include the Paul Saltman Award (2018), the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (2017), the National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2015), the Department of Energy Early Career Award (2105) and a spot on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list (2013).
